Azure optimisation results in 35% saving

Objectives

Through our client’s rapid growth in Azure Consumption, which was $500k plus and rising, they believed that the growth was in line with actual usage. However, we discovered there was a lack of visibility and predictability, as well as rising support costs in line with the consumption. The objective was to give them visibility of actual usage against consumption, provide opportunities for optimisation and avoid making a huge commitment to Microsoft in return for a nominal discount.

Solution

After talking through and analysing the issues with our client in detail, the Cloud Layer team put together a comprehensive plan to find their ideal solution. This involved detailed cost modelling
analysis, benchmarking, and Azure cost analysis. As part of the solution, our client chose the Cloud Solution Provider (CSP) program with Microsoft as this program carried no upfront costs and offered a better price point than other agreements.

This meant the first step was to transfer the billing of their Azure EA (Enterprise Agreement) across to CSP, which resulted in immediate savings (10%) and further savings for support (5%). The billing transfer was straight forward and very quick with no down time or change to their Azure architecture within their subscriptions. This simple change to the billing meant that our client had no committed spend. In addition, the monthly billing not only brought better terms but also drove easier optimisation.

Result

The billing solution brought down Azure costs immediately by 10% and reduced their related support costs by 100%, resulting
in an overall saving of 15% against their annual Azure spend. In addition, the Azure Usage Optimisation resulted in a further
20% saving. Overall, the initial project has delivered 35% in savings without any commitment to Azure spend.
